…& now for a little background on how Caddywhompus grew to become my favorite band making music right now. period.
On a typical visit to Hey! Cafe sometime in the fall of 2009 (may have been winter), Greg & D-Ray were sitting in the coffeeshop with these two dudes talking about Community Records and talking about ‘signing’ them. Well turns out these two guys were in this band, Caddywhompus. Just “Two dudes dudeing it up” from Houston that were going to college here in New Orleans seemed to be creating an impression with the release of their EPs. At Block Party 2010, I finally got to see for myself what all the buzz was about. As a girl who grew up worshiping the world of ska & punk, I had no idea how ‘experimental noise pop’ was going to apply to my life.
That was then…& this is now.
The difference between those two points is that then, I had no idea that just a guitarist/singer and drummer could pack such a powerful punch. I was taken aback that they were able to be so loud & noise-driven, yet still highly technical. The music was complicated, but still catchy. They were energetic, yet exercised patience in building each song to its overwhelming summit.  But most of all, I was taken aback with their raw honesty that I could easily see every audience member identify with. The more shows I went to, the more I found that people were just as amazed as I was. AND to top it all off Caddywhompus does all of this while still upholding the DIY ethos that Community Records was built around. That is why now, I will never miss the opportunity to ‘whomp it up every chance I get.
During my internship last year with the label, I helped package vinyl for thier full length Remainder  & helped D-Ray with screen printing the infamous Michael Phelps “This Is Where We Blaze The Nuggz” shirts. Later that summer, I had the pleasure of becoming friends with Chris & Sean and in becoming schoolmates & better friends while also starting to work more with the label, I realized that I enjoyed nothing more than promoting this band however I could & as much as I possibly could.
Normally I would hesitate in geekin out about a friend’s release, but I feel like I’d be crazy not to.
The Weight while just a short 4-song 21.2 minute-long release, does not falter in leaving a well-defined lasting impact. It has been in the works since the debut of one of the songs at Block Party 2010  and has since developed into a heart-felt experience-driven testament of growing as musicians and as people. There is not a doubt in my mind that this band has extreme potential and with every release they are on their way to meeting it and then most likely redefining it all over again.
For those of you who are on the same page, it’s A-OK to geek out too. We’re all friends here & wether we admit it or not, we all do when it comes to Caddywhompus.
Let it out. You know you want to,
Dominique
