Today, Chinquapin Records and The Skank Family Collective (atx) released our first ever Holiday Charity Jingler. As the title may or may not suggest, it’s 13 tracks of original and standard holiday tunes performed by 6 Chinquapin acts and 7 Skank Family Collective acts.
(From the Bandcamp)

The Skank Family Collective & Chinquapin Records Present: A Holiday Charity Jingler - 13 tracks of winter wonder that will set your hearts aflame. With six songs provided by the Chinquapin Records family and seven by the Skank Family Collective, the jingler forces the listener to question what they thought they knew about the holidays. Enter a new dimension of the “spirit” with us and be merry! All proceeds go to Austin Area Toys for Tots and to prevent hunger and homelessness in New Orleans via NOAAHH. Chinquapin Records’ contribution to the jingler was engineered entirely by champion-man Ross Farbe except for Caddywhompus’ and Chris Rehm’s tracks (engineered by Chris Rehm). Sun Hotel, Country Club, and Chris Rehm wrote original songs. Habitat, Native America, and Caddywhompus performed variations on holiday standards. Skank Family Collective’s contribution was self-recorded by The Sour Notes, Shakey Graves, Milezo, Little Lo and the remainder was engineered by Evan Kaspar and Riley Burgess. MarryAnn & The Revival Band, Greg Mullen and Cole Wilson wrote original songs. The Sour Notes, Shakey Graves, Milezo, and Little Lo performed variations on standard holiday jamz. Special thanks to Amarah Ulghani, Jen Rachid, Jono Foley and Talib Abdullahi.

Permalink Block Party Set! Photo by Lindsay Sanderson
Block Party kicked all kindsa ass (including mine). I’ve been hoarse & sore since Saturday, but I think I finally made a full recovery. It was so crazy having so many friends to see & so many bands to freak out to.
Definitley the best one yet. Ryan from A Billion Ernies declared it better than Christmas and I think he was right. SO much positivity. der wuznt lyke any lumpz of coal, yall.
In other news, the next day Chris Rehm & Native America released a split/cassette called Old Flame|New Squeeze that can be found on Chinquapin Records (for $$ or fo free!). It’s beautiful.
I also bought my first walkman. I named her Ida.

I am excited as effffff. My Dad said that he has a bunch of cassettes I can have. I started hunting for them around the house today while I’m home. No luck yet but you can betcher I’m gun find um.
ALSO… I  may have went through his vinyl collection.. and well, i’m going to borrow (take) them when I get an apartment/our turntable fixed. I would share my findings, but there are too many that I freaked out about to sum up at the moment.
I’m just trying to Spring Break it hard. By that I mean get some actual rest.
It’s working because most of my friends have went on vacation, went home, or are on tour.
Speaking of tours, if you live near where any of these are going…. you’d be a fool not to catch them while you can!
Chris Rehm’s first evurrr SOLO tour. He’s all grown up now.
Sun Hotel’s Spring (Heart) Break Beach Tour. Eating sandwiches & building sandcastles.
Ska Is Dead Young Gun’s Tour. Ft. We Are The Union, The Forthrights, Stuck Lucky, & more!
GIT IT.

Chris Rehm- Worries, Etc.

(click the artwork to download 4 free or purchase to receive 2 bonus traxxx)

Chris Rehm is mainly recognized as the frontman/guitarist for his experimental noise pop band based out of NOLA/Houston called Caddywhompus, but he’s got a solo career that more than deserves recognition.

His unique breed of experimental ambient folk glorifies all that is lo-fi by producing sounds in unlikely ways & in bizarre locations. The magic is how he’s able to blend those sounds together to compose songs that leave such a strong impression.

Worries, Etc. was released off of the label Chinquapin Records that he has created to harbor his friends as well as his own musical endeavors.

Chris’s statement about the album provides further explanation:

I started recording this album before I knew I was recording it: in the summer of 2008. I recorded a guitar loop (the backbone of the first three tracks) and since then, I’ve been adding to and augmenting the recording. Much of the album is inspired by finite relationships, family and friends, the drive between Houston and New Orleans, timelines, and falling behind. This is my seventh solo release (save a live album and a mixtape of collected songs from my childhood) since 2007.”

Worries, Etc.is an album that expands the unique sound of  his last release Salivary Stones which received reviews claiming that, “It is the new sound. The new white noise. The new experiment. The new texture.” (via Forest Gospel).

(click album cover for Bandcamp to dwnld)

In my opinion Worries, Etc. is the definitely the most beautiful work he’s produced thus far with it’s intoxicating soundscapes & moments of tender honesty paired with his signature textured ambient waves of sound that engulf every thought in my head as I listen through the album.

This is more than me recommending a friend’s album to download. This is me recommending an album I’ve already fallen in love with that I feel the need to share with as many people as possible.

Basically, I look forward to listening to this album on repeat. It’s worth it for you do the same.
